Happy New Year! 01/05/2012
Happy New Year from all at HSUP! It may be the time of the January blues (especially with the weather at the moment!) but it is good to get back to work. A games session was held at Salendine Nook yesterday. The room had a really good atmosphere with a number of pupils coming. It was great that pupils came along on the first day of term and seemed to really enjoy the session. Next week, clubs will start again at Rastrick, Honley and Newsome. Add Comment Lots of Christmas fun! 12/16/2011
Well these past two weeks have seen lots of Christmas activities! It has been a lot of fun! We had our last session at Honley last week, where we were kindly given use of a small computer and meeting room to have some nibbles and a Christmas quiz. Pupils really enjoyed it and some questions got us all thinking about the birth of Jesus. This week saw our last sessions of 2011 at Salendine Nook and Newsome. Pupils took part in a Christmas quiz at each of these too and lots of fun was had playing ganmes at Salendine Nook! On Monday, year 2 pupils from St Thomas' CE (VC) Primary School, Bradley, came across to the St Thomas' church building. With a team of volunteers from the church, HSUP was involved in running a craft afternoon which focussed on the nativity story. Pupils engaged really well and seemed to really enjoy the afternoon! A big thank you to all who took part! The afternoon worked well with other activities pupils will be doing in school this week. Update on HSUP activities 11/10/2011
It is about time we wrote an update on here! All our regular activities are now up and running this year. It has been really good to catch up with pupils again. There is, also, a Christian Union starting again at New College. We have been supporting this, as pupils will be running it themselves – which is great! There have been one or two obstacles along the way, such as trying to sort the best day of the week, but I am informed a good discussion session was held last week. New school year 09/07/2011
This week sees the start of a new school year! We are pleased to be back after the school holidays. It will take a little time to build up our regular programme again but these first few weeks offer the opportunity for catching up up with people and planning the term’s activities. It is exciting to see how God will work during this year! We have moved! 08/02/2011
We have now moved from one side of the town centre to the other! Our new home is the Oasis centre. We are really pleased with how the move has gone. Thank you to all who helped! We are, obviously, sad to leave the 611 centre and to no longer share a building with some of the ministries. We are, however, very grateful for the years God has given us at 611 and the good news is that a number of ministries have moved to Oasis together, along with those who already using the building. It will be great to continue to be part of a Christian community and work in a place with a brilliant atmosphere! Quite a year 08/02/2011
It has been quite a year! Lunch clubs have continued at Rastrick, Salendine Nook and Honley, and Pulse after-school club has continued at Newsome. Topics covered this year include charities, Bible stories, lives of well-known Christians - past and present - and Weddings! It is such a privilege to have known a number of pupils over the past three years. I feel having a long-term view is so important in the work! Now we are glad to get a good rest over the summer break and look forward to going into schools again from September! Salendine Nook bun sale 03/08/2011
It is about time I wrote something on here about a bun sale held at Salendine Nook high school just before half-term (February). Last term, our theme at the Wotsit lunch club was charities. A number of visitors came to speak about a range of different charities (including Tearfund, Forget Me Not Trust, CART and Oldgate Hospice), which made for very interesting sessions. We were very grateful that people came in. At the end of series, we asked pupils to vote on a charity (from those we had found out about), that they would like to raise money for and to decide how the money would be raised. It was decided to hold a bun sale for the charity Open Doors. £58. 02 was raised from the bun sale, which took place at lunchtime. Whilst pupils did have a lot of help, they did much themselves, which was great to see! Four pupils brought in buns or cookies to sell, one girl designed a poster, one girl went flyering, one lad was looking to give a notice in assembly and all pupils helped to sell the buns. The remaining buns were solded at a mothers and toddlers group at Community Church, Paddock, the following day. A further £24. 11 was made. We are very grateful to everyone who made buns for the sale! Post Title. 02/28/2011
We are now back after half-term and it is good to get back into the work. It has been good to deliver the second of two sex education lessons to 3 year 9 classes at Honley High school today. The pupils seemed to engage very well with the topic and some very good questions were asked. Hannah is now into her last two weeks of her placement with us. We will very much miss her, as she has been a real blessing to us and the work. This week, also, sees the start of a second lunch club at Salendine Nook High School, which is very exciting! This group will be more discussion based/Bible study. We are hoping that it will be pupil led. This group will take place on a Wednesday lunchtime, at the same time as the existing Wotsit group. Kirklees Esteem Team are now half-way through the year 9 sex education lessons at Honley. It is very interesting to discuss issues with young people and to challenge some of the messages put across in the media. Andrea Longley, who used to work with HSUP and is now working in King James' High School, has invited me to help out with a group of pupils taking an ASDAN course (an alternative qualification - www.asdan.org.uk). I have been along twice to King James' and will be continuing to go in on Monday mornings. It is a privilege to be able to go into the school again and to meet the pupils. Post Title. 01/26/2011
We are now a few weeks into the new term. There have been a number of good lunch club sessions. We are looking at a new topic of different nations, and issues affecting different nations, at Salendine Nook. Last week we were looking at faitrade chcolate and Ghana. We were privileged to be joined by David, who is from Ghana and studying at Huddersfield uni. It was great to hear from his first-hand experience of issues affecting cocoa farmers. We started the topic this term by looking at a Christian perspective on God's heart for the nations. At Honley this term, we are looking at a number of Bible stories and thinking about living as a Christian at school. Next week sees the start of a sex education lessons for year 9 at Honley High School. HSUP will be involved with this, as part of Kirklees Esteem Team. The team will cover all of year 9 with a set of 2 lessons. We are very grateful to Hannah for organising the timetable this year! | Author: Hsup
